It’s sustainability too!
One of the most important issues of our time is sustainability, which is also gaining traction in sports. Sports events increasingly strive for a sustainable execution of the event, one that has only positive effects and no negative side effects. We are aware that sport has a significant influence because it draws lots of participants and spectators who help popularize sustainable development around the globe.
Every event, regardless of size, purpose, or impact, is linked to the natural and social environment in which it occurs. EYOF is a major sporting event with a significant international impact, and our goal is to actively reduce the negative and increase the positive effects.
With this goal in mind, we adopted 25 sustainable goals for the realization of a sustainable event in accordance with established sustainability guidelines. These 25 goals will serve as the foundation for the implementation of many measures in practice. We will learn from previous organizers and strive to set a good example for future organizers.
We will pay special attention to the young generation coming to Maribor as part of the written goals. This is a generation that is very interested in and knowledgeable about environmental issues. These facts make us very happy, because sustainability also entails connecting generations in common socially useful topics.
“To meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” (World Commission on Environment and Development – Brundtland Commission, 1987).
Therefore, we will focus on athletes in Maribor! We will provide participants with useful leisure activities while also raising awareness of pressing sustainability issues in a relaxed and fun manner. We will achive this by organizing workshops on social media visibility, setting up POP-UP second-hand clothing stores and providing space for a clothing exchange. Because this is sustainability too!
“It’s sustainability too!” is the communication guide that we will use to record our activities, and it has good awareness potential. Namely, sustainable behaviour is expected of everyone participating in the event today, and there are many areas and measures to consider. Positive communication with an encouraging tone is thus greatly appreciated.
We have set high expectations for ourselves, but we believe that with a well-coordinated and excellent organizational team and an excellent relationship with all participating stakeholders, we can meet and exceed them.
