IT'S TIME FOR MARIBOR AS A CITY TO STAND TOGETHER!

Young people supporting young people - The Administration of ŠD UM informed us on January 24, 2023, that 1,750 residents of student dormitories had already given up their rooms to young athletes of the European Youth Olympic Festival. The organizers kindly ask and encourage the remaining residents to help write sports history by temporarily moving out during the summer vacation.

The largest sporting event for young people is a huge logistical challenge that will necessitate mutual cooperation to be carried out at the highest level possible. Residents of the student dormitories are currently on the move, and organizers are asking for a 15-day temporary eviction, which will enable the establishment of an Olympic village for the accommodation of athletes and accompanying staff.

Because the residents of ŠD UM have shown interest in signing the annex for voluntary temporary eviction even after the end of the official deadline, together with the Administration of ŠD, the representative of ŠD and the organizing committee of OFEM, we have decided to extend the deadline for signing the annexes until February 10, 2023.

The decision to sign the annex on temporary eviction between 17 and 31 July 2023 is completely voluntary for the residents of the student dormitories. At the initiative of the ŠD UM Resident Council, residents will be exempt from paying rent for the entire month of July and half of August in exchange for moving out during the summer holidays, of course after the exam deadlines.

Maribor has always been known as a city with a sporting heart, and this July, that heart will beat stronger than ever.

Director of OFEM Nataša Ritonja points out: “We are aware that temporary eviction and resettlement can be stressful and tiring, so we will do everything in our power to make this process minimally burdensome for the residents. We will handle moving boxes and provide physical assistance in moving these boxes, as well as safe storage of belongings for those who are unable to take them home. We will also take care of cleaning the rooms before and after moving out.

The organization of such a significant event benefits the city, community, and residents in a variety of ways, including the renovation of sports infrastructure and student dormitories, as well as the development of the city as a tourist destination.

Former Olympian and OFEM ambassador Filip Flisar, who believes in Maribor’s sporting spirit, says optimistically: “We must all work together as a city because this is a large festival that means something to every Maribor resident – the sports infrastructure will grow, as will the city’s pulse. So let us all come together to support the event. Let us show the best young athletes that the people of Maribor are also the best at heart.

We are grateful to all those who have already decided to sign the annex, and we urge those who have yet to sign it to do so by February 10, 2023, at the latest. With this, they will help to co-create an exciting chapter in the history of Slovenian sporting events.
